Veritas Fine Books and Coffeehouse

  - Review by Megan E. Barry

I should note that I am by no means a coffee connoisseur, so when my coffee-loving friends praise a perfectly brewed cup or decry the evils of certain monstrous and impersonal chain-store coffee shops, my typical response is to nod and "mm-hmm" my way through the conversation. When I was informed recently that the mochas at one of the aforesaid chain-store coffee shops were "awful", with the implication that no self-respecting person would stoop to drinking such a shameful beverage, I began to question the prowess of my indiscriminating taste buds - I honestly thought the coffee was fine.

That all changed one evening when I had a mocha at a local coffee shop/used bookstore called Veritas Fine Books and Coffeehouse. The richness of freshly-brewed coffee blended perfectly with the sweet smoothness of chocolate (I do consider myself a bit of a chocolate connoisseur) and I was hooked. I had no idea coffee could be so good!

Veritas Fine Books and Coffeehouse is located on 3500 Chinden Blvd in Garden City, the coffee shop is on the ground level and features a modern decorating style that mixes the classic with the modern into a comfortable eclecticism. Drinks are fresh-brewed and served in beautiful handcrafted ceramic mugs, and the staff is personable and efficient.

The used bookstore is located on the second floor, above the coffee shop, and is home to hundreds of great books, from histories, to science fiction, to literary classics and much more - a bibliophile's dream come true! And for those of us who love going to the library just to smell the books, Veritas offers equally delightful olfactory pleasures!

Whether you just want that shot of espresso first thing in the morning, a rare copy of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, or a place to chat with a friend, Veritas Fine Books and Coffeehouse is the place to be.
